A major fire broke out on the premises of a waste recycling company in Satigny GE on Thursday afternoon. No one was injured. However, the tall black column of smoke could be seen throughout the canton.
The fire department was alerted shortly after 5.30 p.m., the authorities said at the request of Keystone-SDA. The fire was discovered thanks to surveillance cameras. The plant was closed on the national holiday.
On site, the emergency services discovered that flames were rising from several piles of industrial waste, tables, chairs, crates, a small boat and other objects.
Smoke visible everywhere
The fire resulted in a high column of black smoke that was visible practically throughout the entire canton. A total of around 70 firefighters were on site - including Samaritans, who took care of the firefighters' health.
By late evening, the fire was under control but not extinguished. The authorities assumed that the fire department would be in action throughout the night. Alertswiss had advised the population to close doors and windows in the early evening. However, the danger was averted by late evening. The cause of the fire was initially unclear and is being investigated.
