Due to a technical malfunction in the railway system, the train service between Spiez and Visp was interrupted between Frutigen and Visp on Saturday evening. The malfunction was a switch failure in the Lötschberg Base Tunnel, according to the BLS media office. It was expected that the disruption would last until 10pm. There were diversions, delays and cancellations of trains on the IC6 Basel SBB - Bern - Brig, IC8 Brig - Zurich HB - Romanshorn and EC trains. Passengers and freight trains were diverted via the old train route, the Lötschberg Scheiteltunnel, using a shuttle service. Travellers were advised to allow more time for their journeys.
