Italian police arrested a suspected criminal in the province of Como on Thursday afternoon. The man was driving a stolen sports utility vehicle with Swiss license plates. The officers found several weapons in the car.
On entering Italy, the driver evaded a check at the border crossing in Chiasso and drove off in his off-road vehicle, the Italian news agency Adnkronos reported on Friday. The police then launched a manhunt.
According to the information provided, the carabinieri finally stopped the SUV at around 2 p.m. in the village of Rovello Porro, just under 30 kilometers south of Como. They found two pistols, an assault rifle, 66 rounds of pistol ammunition and three rifle magazines in the vehicle. It later transpired that all the weapons had been stolen from a Swiss marksman, it was reported.
The car contained other suspected stolen goods: laptops, a tablet, spirits, women's clothing and more than 200 silver items. The arrested man also had a screwdriver, a drill and a knuckleduster with him. According to the Carabinieri, all the material was confiscated and is being investigated further.
Regarding the identity of the arrested man, Adnkronos only wrote that he was a foreign national. When he was arrested, he presented the police with a forged Greek driver's license and a forged passport. A search of the relevant database revealed that the man had several criminal convictions in Italy and had been expelled from the country in the past. The man was taken to prison in Como.
