A 32-year-old mountaineer had a fatal accident in the Säntis massif on Wednesday. According to a statement, the man slipped on the rough terrain in the Musfallen area and fell over a hundred meters.
It must be assumed that the mountaineer lost his way to the Säntis summit due to the masses of snow, wrote the Appenzell Ausserrhoden cantonal police in a statement on Thursday. He probably slipped on the snow before falling.
The man had previously been noticed by a Säntisbahnen employee while crossing a snow field. When he could no longer see him a short time later, he alerted the air rescue service. They were able to spot the accident victim in the steep terrain and, according to the press release, were only able to recover him dead.
