The defense attorney of a 36-year-old man from the Canton of Lucerne, who is accused of killing his partner with 65 stab wounds in 2021, requested at the beginning of the trial before the criminal court on Monday that the interrogations of the accused from 2021 be declared inadmissible. Due to the accused's Long Covid illness, which has been shown to have a so-called hypermetabolism, as the defense attorney explained. The defendant's state of mind at the beginning of the two-day trial could have resulted in memory loss and cognitive impairments. This could have significantly impaired his ability to be questioned, he said. The prosecution argued that the accused had been oriented during all interrogations, which he had confirmed. The defense had only recently claimed impairment, which was deemed to be "calculated". Before the court makes a decision on the application, the judges will conduct an interrogation of the accused. ©Keystone/SDA
