The district court of Münchwilen TG has sentenced a 35-year-old waiter to 14 years in prison. He shot two guests several times with a pistol outside a bar in Rickenbach TG. Prior to this, there had been a dispute about the coronavirus measures in force in the bar at the time, such as the obligation to wear a mask and the restriction on the number of people in the bar.
The court found the man guilty of multiple attempted murders, according to the verdict, which was published on Saturday. The Serb will be deported from the country for 15 years following his prison sentence.
The employee of a bar shot his two victims at close range outside the bar in May 2021. When they fled, he followed them and continued to pull the trigger, according to the public prosecutor's office. At least seven shots were fired.
The victims survived despite gunshot wounds. According to the indictment, one of the men was in a life-threatening condition.
Arrested in Hungary
Immediately after the shooting, the man fled abroad. He was arrested seven months later in Hungary and transferred to Switzerland.
In court, the confessed perpetrator apologized to the victims. However, they were partly responsible for the escalation due to provocation. The waiter claimed to have been attacked and to have acted in self-defense.
During the court hearing, the public prosecutor described this as a "protective allegation". He had acted particularly unscrupulously because he had been hurt in his pride and honor after discussions in the bar. The prosecution demanded 16 years in prison.
In addition to the prison sentence and expulsion from the country, the court ordered the perpetrator to pay legal costs and victim compensation amounting to around 130,000 francs.
The judgment is not yet final.
