Man sentenced to 19 years in prison for murder in Geneva

A 35-year-old man was sentenced to 19.5 years in prison for murder by the Geneva Criminal Court on Wednesday. The judges found the Somali man guilty of stabbing his ex-wife's new partner to death in January 2021.
The court also convicted the defendant of the attempted murder of his ex-wife, from whom he had been separated for a year. He had three children with her, all of whom went to school in Geneva. The man will be deported from Switzerland after serving his prison sentence.
The public interest outweighed the defendant's interest in being close to his children, the court stated in justifying the expulsion. The defendant's lawyer, Anna Sergeeva, did not rule out the possibility of appealing against the expulsion. She was of the opinion that her client would be at risk if he returned to Somalia due to the clan law in force there.
The criminal court found that the defendant acted with immense brutality when he stabbed his ex-wife's new partner 19 times. He had not been able to bear the thought that the mother of his children could start a new life.
