Italian customs officials have confiscated 14 kilograms of cultured pearls at the Chiasso border crossing. The goods, worth 143,000 euros, were in the luggage of an Italian resident in Switzerland who was traveling by train from Lugano to Milan.
The man had not declared the goods, which were loosely packed in plastic bags, and had no papers with him, as the Italian news agency Ansa reported on Monday. The invoice he presented a few days later was also unconvincing: it amounted to 7,000 euros and was therefore far below the value of 143,000 euros determined by the customs officials.
The man was charged with smuggling and VAT evasion.
