The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB), part of the BVZ Group, is pressing ahead with the renewal of its fleet. The railroad operator is ordering a further 25 Orion multiple-unit trains from Stadler Rail. The order is worth CHF 266 million, as announced by MGB on Tuesday.
The order is part of the company's fleet strategy. This envisages covering regional passenger transport exclusively with multiple units in future. Following the procurement of Komet multiple units from 2007 to 2014, the Orion multiple units will now complete the strategy, according to the press release.
Stadler was awarded the contract to supply the Orion multiple units in two stages as part of a public tender in 2018. The first stage agreed in 2020 included twelve Orion multiple-unit trains for 148.5 million Swiss francs. The first trains from this delivery are already in service. All twelve trains from the first stage will be delivered by the end of the current year.
Renewal of the 2030 fleet completed
Production of the 25 trains in the second stage will reportedly begin at the start of 2025, with delivery of the first train planned for the fall of the same year, which will then enter service in the first quarter of 2026. After that, the plan is to deliver a further train every six weeks.
The name "Orion" stands for "Optimum regional train for local public transport". According to the press release, the multiple-unit trains can be used on the entire MGB route network from Zermatt to Disentis. They can run in single, double or triple traction and thus offer up to 438 seats, 72 of which are in first class, according to the statement.
By 2030, MGB intends to operate only with multiple units. The investment volume for all 37 multiple units of the "Komet" and "Orion" brands reportedly amounts to around CHF 420 million.
