Swiss people often enter into a relationship with a politically like-minded person. This is particularly noticeable in the political parties. While women tend to pay more attention to the party affiliation of their partners, men tend to focus more on values.
This was revealed by a representative study commissioned by the Gender Equality Association, the results of which were published in the "NZZ am Sonntag" on Sunday. The study, conducted by the Sotomo research institute, is also available to the Keystone-SDA news agency.
In the survey, 69% of SVP voters and 61% of SP voters stated that they were in a relationship with someone close to the same party as themselves. When Swiss men and women "cheat", it is usually in their political neighborhood, according to the study.
In general, the supporters of the Greens and the SVP showed the least openness when it came to relationships with political dissidents. In the partnership market, centrist voters are the most popular. GLP voters are the most open to a liaison outside of their own political affiliation.
Feminist has a negative effect
Sotomo also asked about values. It was noticed that the interviewees expressed more precise ideas about which identities their partners should not have than about which identities they should have.
The only characteristics that are often considered a prerequisite for a relationship are meat-eating and a focus on tradition. In turn, characteristics such as non-flying, feminist, woke or vegan would be avoided by many.
Regarding the methodology, Sotomo noted that the data was collected between May 14 and 27, 2024. 3528 people from German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland took part in the survey.
