Miduca, which belongs to the Migros Group, plans to close three club schools this year. Instead, it wants to invest in "innovative location concepts, digital learning formats and modern technologies".

Specifically, Miduca will close the club schools in Brig and Sursee at the end of June 2024, followed by the club school in Thun at the end of December. Two rooms in Lyss will also no longer be used at the end of 2024, as Miduca announced on Thursday afternoon. After that, the club schools will still have 28 locations across Switzerland.

Migros' educational institutions are grouped together under the Miduca umbrella, including in particular the Migros Club School and the Institute for Vocational Education and Training (IBAW). The club schools of the Migros Cooperative Eastern Switzerland are not part of Miduca.

"In order to realize these future-oriented investments, the available funds must be used efficiently at locations with a wide reach and high market potential", Miduca explains the decision in the press release. No further closures are planned, a spokesperson told the news agency AWP in response to an inquiry. The closure of the locations is also unrelated to the recently announced restructuring measures at the Migros Cooperative Alliance. The decision was made solely within Miduca, the spokesperson continued.

Courses that are in high demand will continue to take place, but in external rooms. For example, the swimming courses in Thun will continue to be offered at the Oberhofen indoor pool, the statement continues. According to the press release, Migros will provide alternatives for customers who have already booked courses.

If possible, internal alternatives will be offered to administrative staff and teachers affected by the closures. The spokesperson was not yet able to say how many people will be affected. Many discussions are currently still underway, for example to enable teachers to continue working at other locations.

There is a comprehensive social plan with support measures for employees who have been made redundant. This has been developed together with the social partners.
