Switzerland's national roads are having to cope with more and more traffic. 48,807 hours of congestion were counted last year. That was 22.4 percent more than in 2022 and thus more than ever before.
Freeways, motorways and third-class national roads only account for just under 3 percent of the entire road network, as the Federal Roads Office (Astra) wrote on Monday. However, they account for a good 45 percent of all vehicle kilometers driven.
A total of 29.6 billion kilometers were driven on the motorway network in 2023, 1.5% more than in the previous year. According to Astra, congestion on the national roads reached a record level. Almost 90 percent of the total of 48,807 congestion hours were due to traffic congestion.
According to Astra, the fact that the number of hours of congestion increased by 22.4 percent within a year, but the number of vehicle kilometers by only 1.5 percent, shows the load limit of the national road network.
