A 32-year-old mother was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in Bern on Thursday. The Bern-Mittelland Regional Court found it proven that she killed her eight-year-old daughter.

The mother fought back tears as the verdict was announced. She had always denied the crime. The court based its guilty verdict on the available evidence. The mother is accused of not having told the truth in court either.

The defense had pleaded for acquittal, while the prosecution demanded a life sentence. They considered the woman's guilt to be proven on the basis of numerous pieces of evidence.

The girl's body was discovered in Könizbergwald near Bern in February 2022. The child is said to have been beaten to death with a large stone. Blood stains and three of the victim's hairs were found on the stone, as well as a trace of the mother's DNA.

A then twelve-year-old boy testified that he had seen the woman and her daughter going into the woods shortly before the time of the crime. The accused denied this: She had been at home at the time of the crime. Her daughter had wanted to go to a friend's house.
