The mother from France who was arrested in 2022 in the Morges VD area after fleeing with her daughter for almost eleven years has been released. The 49-year-old had been sentenced to an unconditional prison sentence of two years and nine months in appeal proceedings.
The online portals of the newspapers "24 heures" and "Journal de Morges" as well as French media reported on the woman's release from a prison in Marseille on Wednesday evening. When she was interviewed by the French television station BFMTV after her release from prison, she said that she was "proud" to have gone with her daughter and that it was "the most beautiful thing" she had done in her life.
She recalled that she had made this decision to keep her away from her father, whom her mother and daughter accused of incest. The father had always denied the accusations and the investigation carried out at the time had been dropped.
The mother and her daughter were discovered at the beginning of March 2022 during a traffic stop near Morges. They had been reported missing since 2011. The mother had fled with her then five-year-old daughter from the Toulon area in France. She was divorcing at the time and was demanding sole custody of her daughter.
Daughter stays in Switzerland
The mother had spent several weeks in La Tuilière prison in Lonay VD before being extradited to France. She was sentenced to five years in prison at first instance, but the sentence was reduced to two years and nine months on appeal.
The daughter, who was a minor at the time of her mother's arrest, was placed with a foster family in Switzerland. "She is now of age and free. She is staying in Switzerland, where she is doing her education and her life," the mother's lawyer told the TV station BFMTV.
