A 52-year-old motorcyclist collided with the tunnel wall shortly before the exit of the Seelisberg tunnel in Beckenried NW on Saturday morning and died. The tunnel on the A2 highway heading north was closed for some time for the recovery and rescue work.

The two-wheeler coming from Uri veered to the right shortly after 9 a.m. and crashed head-on into the wall of a cross-cut, according to the Nidwalden cantonal police. The local man died at the scene of the accident. The exact circumstances of the accident are under investigation.

The police closed the southbound tube of the Seelisberg tunnel for a short time and the northbound tube for three hours. This resulted in a traffic jam. The Gotthard road tunnel in the northbound direction was also temporarily closed to prevent the traffic jam in the canton of Uri from getting any worse.
