Despite the warm winter weather, Swiss mountain railroads transported more guests in March than a year ago. Across Switzerland, first-time admissions to the cable cars rose by 5 percent compared to March a year ago, as the Swiss Cable Car Association announced on Friday.
In February, the figure was still down 9 percent. However, like February, March was "far too warm". The ski resorts only benefited to a limited extent from the fact that the Easter holidays fell at the end of March. In addition, some resorts had to shut down operations for several days due to strong winds, the association added.
From a regional perspective, there were major differences. According to the figures, all ski resorts in the Jura (-21%) were already closed and in the Bernese Oberland (-4%), strong foehn storms meant that facilities remained partially or completely closed on three weekends, including Easter.
Fresh snow at high altitudes
Ticino (+43%), on the other hand, was able to attract numerous guests - except at Easter. In addition, winter destinations at higher altitudes continued to benefit from good snow conditions, according to the report. Valais (+4%) and Graubünden (+9%), for example, recorded increases in March.
For destinations at higher altitudes, the industry association is still expecting good conditions in April. He is confident that with the new large amounts of snow and many festivals, many guests will also find their way to the ski resorts in April, association director Berno Stoffel is quoted as saying in the press release.
