A mountaineer crashed on the Spallagrat near Pontresina GR on Friday. Rega was only able to recover the 43-year-old man dead, as the Graubünden cantonal police announced on Sunday.

The alpinist from Germany had been on a two-man rope team with a colleague with the aim of reaching the Marco e Rosa hut in Italy. The emergency call was received from a third party on Friday afternoon, it was reported.

Two helicopters and rescue specialists from the SAC were deployed in poor weather conditions. Police and the Graubünden public prosecutor's office began an investigation, according to the cantonal police.
