The National Council wants to support the 2025 Women's European Football Championship in Switzerland with up to CHF 15 million. This is almost four times as much as the Federal Council is requesting in view of the tight finances.
The National Council approved the increase in federal contributions on Tuesday, along with other supplementary credits. It followed the lead of its Finance Committee, in some cases with narrow majorities. Now it is the turn of the Council of States. Its preliminary committee is recommending the same increase for the Women's European Football Championship.
In total, the National Council approved eleven supplementary credits totaling around CHF 605 million as well as several additional credits and commitment credits. Most of the money is earmarked for reserve power plants and - in view of a higher number of expected asylum applications - for more places for new arrivals in federal asylum centers and more staff in the asylum sector.
The National Council rejected proposals by the SVP and also the FDP to cut or cancel the credits for asylum.
