National Council Becomes More Male-Dominated

The proportion of women in the newly elected National Council has decreased compared to the 2019 elections: 77 female politicians were elected to the National Council on Sunday. That is seven fewer women than four years ago. According to the latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office, the proportion of women has increased to 38.5 percent. At the 2019 National Council elections, women had made strong gains. They secured 84 of the 200 seats in the lower house. The proportion of women was then 42 percent. During the last legislature, the proportion of women decreased slightly due to departures. The average age of the National Council members elected on Sunday is 49.5 years. The oldest is 76-year-old Charles Poncet from Geneva (SVP). The youngest National Council member is 26-year-old Katja Riem from Bern (SVP). In the last legislature, the members of the large chamber were on average 51.7 years old. ©Keystone/SDA
