According to the UN emergency aid office OCHA, billions are needed this year to supply the suffering population of the Gaza Strip and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
The United Nations is asking donor countries to provide an additional 2.8 billion US dollars (around 2.6 billion euros) for 3.3 million people by the end of the year, OCHA announced in Geneva on Wednesday.
The majority, around 2.5 billion dollars, is earmarked for the Palestinians in the sealed-off Gaza Strip. The total requirement is actually even higher, around four billion dollars, but experts estimate that it will not be possible to implement all the necessary programs in the coming months under the difficult conditions. According to experts, there is a threat of famine in parts of the Gaza Strip, especially in the north.
The Gaza war began a good six months ago after the devastating attack by terrorists from the Islamist Hamas and other extremists in the Israeli border region.
