In the canton of Vaud, the conflict with a group of travellers came to a head on Friday. The travellers with their 40 or so caravans refused to leave an occupied site on the outskirts of Lausanne and move to another location in Yverdon.
Negotiations with the travellers, who had settled in Chalet-à-Gobet above Lausanne on Thursday evening, had come to a standstill, according to the cantonal authorities. "We made them a concrete proposal to go to a perfectly equipped site where they could have been accommodated under good conditions. But they refused," Laurent Curchod, the new cantonal delegate for relations with travellers, told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request.
For the other convoy, which arrived in Lausanne on Thursday, the situation has been resolved, at least for a few weeks. The 25 caravans were set up in Montheron, north of Lausanne, in the parking lot of the La Rama fire department training center.
According to the City of Lausanne, the plot will be made available to caravanners for three months without renewal. All users of the parking lot must pay a fee of 30 francs per caravan per day. In addition, the authorities collect a fee of 100 francs per caravan to cover any costs for the maintenance of the site.
Escorted by police
On Thursday, two caravan convoys tried to enter Lausanne, one from the north and one from the south. They were blocked by the police and then escorted to the outskirts of the city.
The exact destination of the travelers was not known. However, it was likely that they were trying to return to the Bourdonnette parking lot, where around 120 caravans had been parked between February and September 2023, according to the authorities.
As the official reception area in Rennaz is already fully booked with around 40 pitches, the canton of Vaud is expecting an uncontrolled influx of travellers, as it did last year.
