More new cars were registered on the roads in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein in April than a year ago. The number of new car registrations increased by 10.4 percent to 20,040 compared to April 2023, as reported by the industry association Auto Schweiz on Thursday.

The market for new cars grew despite the current economic downturn, although supply bottlenecks and parts shortages had weighed on the car market in the previous year, the press release continued. Following setbacks in January and March and an increase in February and April, the first four months saw a slight increase of 0.4 percent to 77,264 new cars put on the market.

There are still many new cars with alternative drive systems on Swiss roads. According to Auto Schweiz, 57.9% of new cars in the first four months were hybrid, electric, gas or hydrogen-powered, despite the continuing reluctance to sell electric cars. With 13,603 new electric cars, this category has come to a standstill this year.

Despite losses, petrol cars remain the market leader with just under a third of the market share of registered cars. They are closely followed by new cars with hybrid drives without plugs, which now also account for just under a third thanks to further growth. Plug-in vehicles account for just over a quarter of new registrations since the beginning of the year, with diesels accounting for the remaining ten percent.
