With the new Hochrhein-Bodensee-Express, a new rail link from Basel via Schaffhausen to Herisau AR is to go into operation from December 2027. The cantons and districts involved, the Federal Office of Transport and the German state of Baden-Württemberg have signed an agreement to this effect.
The core of the project is the continuous electrification of the line along the High Rhine, the contract partners announced on Monday. Today, a large part of the route can only be used by diesel trains.
The federal state of Baden-Württemberg and the districts of Lörrach and Waldshut have signed the implementation and financing contract with Deutsche Bahn for the electrification and expansion of the Hochrheinbahn line between Badischer Bahnhof in Basel and Erzingen (Germany), according to a communiqué.
The financing of the infrastructure expansion will be secured via the German federal government's municipal transport financing laws as well as via co-financing from the state of Baden-Württemberg and with financial support from the districts of Lörrach and Waldshut, according to the statement. Switzerland is also participating in this project as part of the 2035 rail expansion step. It is expected to cost around 330 million Swiss francs.
