From summer 2027, director Nicolas Stemann is to become the new artistic director of the Bochum Schauspielhaus. He was most recently co-director of the Schauspielhaus Zürich together with playwright Benjamin von Blomberg. At the beginning of 2023, it was announced that their contracts would not be extended.
Born in Hamburg, Stemann has directed at numerous major German-speaking theaters, including the Thalia Theater, the Deutsches Theater Berlin and the Salzburg Festival. He was also in-house director at the Vienna Burgtheater and the Munich Kammerspiele for several years.
He has worked with Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek on several occasions and has repeatedly been invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen with his plays.
"The series of directors who have left their mark on this theater is impressive to this day, and I feel honored to be able to continue here," said Stemann on his appointment to Bochum, according to a statement on Thursday. Peter Zadek (1972-79), Claus Peymann (1979-86) and most recently Johan Simons, who will be succeeded by Stemann, are among the best-known theater makers at the helm of Bochum's Stadttheater.
Simons has managed the Schauspielhaus in the Ruhr city since 2019 and has once again made it one of the most important theaters in Germany. Under his leadership, it was named Theater of the Year by critics in 2022. Simons has repeatedly brought the celebrated actress Sandra Hüller to Bochum for leading roles.
According to a statement from the city of Bochum, his contract was due to expire at the end of July 2026. As Stemann would only be available from the season after that, the city was grateful that Simons had not hesitated to continue his work for another year.
