The municipalities of Nidwalden will be given more organizational freedom. For example, the term of office of the presidency no longer necessarily lasts two years, but can now also last four years. The municipal council will be given more time to convene an extraordinary municipal assembly.

On Sunday, voters approved an amendment to the cantonal constitution with a clear majority of 82 percent (11,786 yes to 2548 no votes), as announced by the State Chancellery on Sunday. The voter turnout was 47 percent.

There was no vote on the simultaneous revision of the Municipalities Act. Unlike the constitutional amendment, this was not subject to a mandatory referendum.

Another change is that municipal council ordinances are no longer subject to an optional referendum. The amendments have also paved the way legally for electronic voting.

The revision implemented the concerns of the municipalities. The changes were also undisputed in the District Council.
