Nidwalden municipalities to be given more freedom

The municipal authorities in Nidwalden are to be given more organizational freedom. Voters will decide on this on September 22.
The Nidwalden parliament has revised several points in the municipal law and the cantonal constitution. These implement concerns of the municipalities that affect their organization. Only the constitutional amendment, which is subject to a mandatory referendum, will be put to the vote in September.
The new provisions in the constitution extend deadlines, for example when it comes to convening extraordinary municipal assemblies. The term of office of the presidency will no longer necessarily last two years; a four-year term of office will also be possible.
Another planned change is that municipal council ordinances will no longer be subject to an optional referendum. In addition, the legal path for electronic voting is to be paved.
The new constitutional provisions were undisputed in the Landrat.
