The two prisoners who escaped from the Bässlergut prison in Basel on Friday are still on the run. The manhunt is continuing, said a spokesperson for the Basel Department of Justice and Security on Saturday at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.
It is not known how the men were able to escape from prison. This must first be clarified internally, said Toprak Yerguz, Head of Communications at the department.
A 22-year-old Tunisian and a 37-year-old Algerian are being sought. The Tunisian fled from early release from prison. He is accused, among other things, of attempted intentional homicide and attempted multiple grievous bodily harm, as well as robbery, multiple thefts and violence against authorities.
The Algerian fled from prison. He was convicted of damage to property, trespassing and unlawful entry.
After the escape on Friday afternoon, the cantonal police issued an appeal for witnesses. Law enforcement agencies in Switzerland and abroad have been called in to assist in the manhunt.
