The Swiss-German dual citizen Nora Gomringer will be awarded the Ida Dehmel Literature Prize 2024. The prize honors literary excellence by women in the German-speaking world. Poet and performer Nora Gomringer receives it for her "very own sound".
Nora Gomringer "resolutely addresses unconventional topics", according to a press release issued on Tuesday. Pointed, witty and at the same time with great attentiveness and stylistic diversity, she lends her thoughts the appropriate form in each case, the prize jury continued.
Gomringer is versatile in her poetry; in terms of content, she spans an arc from classical antiquity to postmodernism. She frequently collaborates with artists from the fields of jazz, photography and film. She also designs stage spaces and programs.
For Gomringer, the Ida Dehmel Prize joins previous awards and honors such as the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize (2015), the Max Kade Professorship in Ohio (2019) and the Poetry Lectureship at the University of Heidelberg (2023). Gomringer lives in Bamberg, Bavaria, where he has been director of the state's Künstlerhaus since 2010.
The Ida Dehmel Prize is endowed with 10,000 euros and has been awarded every three years since 1968. It is sponsored by the Association of Communities of Women Artists and Art Patrons (Gedok). This association, based in Bonn, is a network for female artists from various disciplines.
One of Gedok's aims is to promote the achievements of female artists and make them visible to the public. The Gedok was founded in 1926 by the women's rights activist and patron Ida Dehmel (1870-1942).
