The number of asylum applications fell by 26% in August compared to the previous year. Compared to July, there was a decrease of 2 percent. In the last two years, the number in August was significantly higher than in the previous month, as reported by the Federal Office for Migration on Tuesday.

The Federal Office for Migration (SEM) registered a total of 18,599 asylum applications in the first eight months. Of these, 3000 were from people who were already in Switzerland. They therefore do not place an additional burden on the asylum structures.

Afghanistan remained the most important country of origin in August with 632 applications. Almost a quarter of these applications came from women from Afghanistan, which is ruled by the radical Taliban, who had already been temporarily admitted. Other important countries of origin in August were Turkey, Algeria and Eritrea.

In August, the SEM reduced the number of asylum applications pending in the first instance by 190 to 12,390. In January, there were still 15,655 pending applications. In August, the Federal Office decided on 2,849 applications, just under a third of which were approved. 780 people without a right of residence left Switzerland independently. Switzerland deported 295 to their country of origin, the responsible Dublin country or a third country.
