After a decline in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, the over-60s are once again visiting the gym more frequently. According to a study by the industry association Swiss Active, 13.6% of fitness customers came from this age category last year. The year before, the figure was significantly lower at 9.2%.

"This development shows that older exercisers are finding their way back to the centers," says the study published on Tuesday. "This generation in particular has stayed away from the centers during Corona, but they need the training the most," Sarah Kobel, professor at the German University for Prevention and Health Management, told the media. Together with the over-50s, the number of older exercisers is even more than a quarter.

However, it was not only the proportion of the older age group that rose significantly last year, but also that of young exercisers up to the age of 20. Their share rose from 9.5 percent in 2022 to 10.6 percent. Industry representatives who were present at the press conference are feeling this in their fitness centers.

Generation Z, for example, is particularly weight training-oriented and also very educated in terms of how to train. In addition to weight training, they are also looking for a balance to make their training more holistic. Pure muscle mass is less in demand nowadays; it's more about keeping the body as healthy as possible. "This doesn't stop at training, but continues with topics such as nutrition and health tips," said one fitness center owner in attendance.
