On the eve of Switzerland's National Day, August 1st, several members of the Federal Council reminded the nation of its strengths and spread optimism. President Alain Berset urged people not to lose courage in the face of numerous crises, while Defence Minister Viola Amherd emphasised the importance of security and independence, and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis highlighted the stability of democracy. Berset referred to the Constitution, which was created 175 years ago during a difficult time. He said that the "founding fathers" kept their courage and optimism, and laid the foundation for a successful Switzerland that is constantly evolving. He called for reforms for the future, comparing the construction of the railway in the young federal state to the current transformation of the "service public" into the digital age. Amherd said that independence and security are part of Switzerland's DNA, while Cassis noted that the country is the oldest and most stable democracy in Europe. He said that the Constitution, which was created in just 51 days, must be nurtured, and that freedom is only for those who make use of it. On the evening of July 31st, the traditional fireworks display was held in Basel, although it was shorter than usual. Around 100,000 people were expected to attend.
