One dead person recovered after house fire in Andermatt UR

An 88-year-old man is presumed dead in a house fire in Andermatt UR on Thursday night. The Uri cantonal police found a dead person in the fire during their investigation at midday.
The 88-year-old had been missing after the fire. The identity of the person found dead and the cause of death have not yet been clarified, the Uri cantonal police announced in the afternoon. However, it is assumed that it is the missing man.
The fire broke out in the apartment building, which is located on Gotthardstrasse in the village center, shortly before 4 am. When the fire departments from Andermatt, Altdorf, Hospental and Realp arrived, the building was fully engulfed in flames. However, the emergency services were able to quickly bring the fire under control and extinguish it, according to the police. They were also able to prevent the flames from spreading to other houses.
The fire department evacuated 22 people from the burning and surrounding buildings. Two people were admitted to the cantonal hospital in Altdorf UR due to suspected smoke inhalation, but were able to leave after a short time, according to the Uri cantonal police.
The cause of the fire and the amount of property damage were not yet known on Thursday.
