Opening of the Landsgemeinde with a warning about a third world war

In his opening speech on Sunday at the Glarner Landsgemeinde, Glarus's Landammann Benjamin Mühlemann (FDP) warned against a third world war. With a view to freedom in the country, he called on the people of Glarus to join forces.
Instead of looking paralysed towards a third world war, it is important to join forces now and prioritize security. Unimaginable what would happen if the "domineering rulers" were to completely lose their nerve, said Mühlemann in front of thousands of voters in Glarus, referring to the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
He praised the Landsgemeinde as a place of social balance and progress. This direct democracy must be cultivated all the more in view of the global political situation. As the supreme legislative body of the mountain canton, all voters can participate directly in legislation at the "Ring".
After his opening speech, Mühlemann handed over his office and the leadership of the Landsgemeinde to his deputy, Kaspar Becker (center), as planned.
