Opening of the Tunnel at the Pyramids of Euseigne in Valais

The new road tunnel near the Pyramids of Euseigne in the Valais region of Switzerland was opened on Saturday after 18 months of construction. The 120 metre long tunnel was built entirely into the local moraine and replaces the narrow tunnel from 1947, which ran through the geological formations. It is designed to improve the safety and comfort of the approximately 3500 drivers who use the cantonal road between Sitten and Haudères every day. The new tunnel, located just 40 metres from the old one, also allows trucks and post buses to cross, which was not possible in the narrow tunnel. Visitors to the geological site can now safely visit the Pyramids without conflict with traffic. The tunnel also contributes to the protection of the natural monument of the Pyramids, which is listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of national importance. A footpath for visitors to the Pyramids will be created on the old, unused route by 2027, and a tourist pavilion will be built at the entrance to the village of Euseigne.
