The Swiss parahotel industry recorded slightly more overnight stays in 2023 than in the previous year. Around two thirds of the guests counted in vacation apartments, campsites and collective accommodation came from Switzerland.

Specifically, the Swiss parahotel industry recorded 17.6 million overnight stays last year, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Tuesday. This was 0.9% more than in 2022, although the pre-coronavirus level of 2019 had already been exceeded at that time.

This continued to be driven by rising demand from foreign tourists. The number of overnight stays rose by a good 10% year-on-year to 5.6 million. For the first time, more foreign guests stayed overnight in Swiss parahotel accommodation than in the last pre-corona year of 2019.

At the same time, the Swiss continued to spend more vacations in Switzerland. At 12.0 million overnight stays, the parahotel industry counted 3.0% fewer domestic guests than in the previous year. However, the figure was still significantly higher than in 2019.

Together with overnight stays in hotels, overnight stays in all tourist accommodation grew by 6.6% to 59.3 million last year. This was the first time that the pre-pandemic level of 2019 was exceeded for total accommodation (+5.5%).
