The Federal Council must take a closer look at the allocation of aid funds in Palestine. The Council of States has passed a motion calling for stricter controls to ensure that funds are not used to finance terrorism.

On Wednesday, the Council of States voted in favor of the motion by the National Council's Foreign Affairs Committee (FAC-N) by 21 votes to 20, with no abstentions. Its own Foreign Affairs Committee, the Foreign Affairs Committee-S, had backed the motion by a narrow majority.

In view of the funds available for the Middle East, the measures were justified in the eyes of the majority, said Commission President Marco Chiesa (SVP/TI).

A minority led by Damian Müller (FDP/LU) rejected the motion on formal grounds. There is already a mechanism in place to review organizations and projects. The minority also acknowledged the motion's demand, but considered it to be fulfilled. The Federal Council was of the same opinion.
