The Federal Council should not have to ask the city of Geneva and the surrounding area to host one of the future UN climate conferences. After the Council of States, the National Council also rejected a corresponding initiative by the canton of Geneva with this request.

On Friday, the Grand Chamber decided by 118 votes to 71, with four abstentions, at the request of its Foreign Affairs Committee (FAC-N) to reject the Geneva initiative. This means that the matter is now closed.

According to committee spokesperson Hans-Peter Portmann (FDP/ZH), the majority consider such a conference to be too resource-intensive, particularly in terms of financial and personnel costs. In their eyes, Switzerland is already very active at the diplomatic level.

According to spokesperson Nicolas Walder (Greens/GE), the minority was of the opinion that Switzerland should become actively involved in the area of climate change - all the more so as the associated challenges would take on an increasingly important place in the international debate.

The Council of States rejected the initiative in March of this year. With the Second Council's rejection, the issue is definitely off the table.
