According to Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin, the current level of wage protection will be guaranteed with the new agreement. Wage protection is a key factor for the unions' approval.
The result of the negotiations with the EU is not the only thing that secures the current level of wage protection in Switzerland, Parmelin emphasized to the media in Bern on Friday. Talks with employers and the social partners would continue. "With the accompanying national measures that the Confederation, the cantons and the social partners are still working on, we will achieve the goal of securing the level of wage protection," said Parmelin.
Parmelin also sees "significant advantages" in the agreement for the food industry. After all, agricultural products and foodstuffs worth CHF 16 billion are traded with the EU every year. "Switzerland and the EU want to cooperate even more closely in the area of food safety," said Parmelin. However, Switzerland would retain complete independence in this area.
As Minister of Education, Parmelin also expressed his delight at Switzerland's resumption of participation in the EU's Horizon research program. "Participate diligently in the EU programs," Parmelin addressed researchers. The negotiated agreement now creates a legal framework for cooperation in education, research and innovation with the EU.
