The planned silent Bern vigil for a just peace in Israel/Palestine, scheduled for Friday, has been cancelled due to security concerns. The planning group of the vigil cited this as the reason for the cancellation, which is unusual as the vigil has been held on the second Friday of every month for the past twenty years at the Bern train station. According to Heinz Bichsel, a member of the planning group, the risk of misinterpreting the action is higher than usual in the current climate and the public is not open to a nuanced stance. In agreement with the police, additional security measures would be necessary to ensure the safety of participants, but hiring a private security firm would destroy the character of a "silent vigil". The organisers of the vigil are the Bern Vigil for a Just Peace in Israel and Palestine, the Ecumenical Office for Mission and Development Cooperation of the Reformed Churches of Bern-Jura-Solothurn, and Justice and Peace in Palestine (GFP). The first vigil was held in November 1997.
