The Swiss Association of General Practitioners and Pediatricians is calling for more doctors to be trained. In particular, significantly more family doctors and pediatricians are needed. A petition to this effect with 53,786 signatures was presented to parliament in Bern on Thursday.
The need for action by family doctors and pediatricians is huge, it was reported in Bern on Thursday. In the petition, the Swiss Association of General Practitioners and Pediatricians calls for immediate measures to be taken now.
In general, the number of medical study places must be increased. In future, at least half of medical students would also have to choose family medicine and pediatrics in order to meet future demand.
In order for all future GPs and pediatricians to gain practical experience and decide to enter practice, the number of practice assistant positions during further training needs to be increased from the current 280 to 720.
For these and other accompanying measures, an "impulse program for family medicine" is needed, the press release continues. In the Dispatch on the Promotion of Education, Research and Innovation (ERI Dispatch) 2025 - 2028, CHF 200 million would have to be earmarked for this purpose.
