Two fans of the FC Sion football club were arrested on Friday. They were allegedly part of a group of Ultras from Sion who had attacked police officers during riots before the FC Sion v FC Lausanne-Sport match at the end of July.

The Valais public prosecutor's office announced that pre-trial detention has been requested for the accused. The presumption of innocence applies to both. The investigation will continue in order to identify other parties involved.

According to the public prosecutor's office, a group of Sion Ultras had taken the usual route to the stadium near the Tourbillon stadium in Sion on July 27 in order to fight with the fans of FC Lausanne-Sports. Officers from the cantonal police intervened and asked the Sion Ultras to keep their distance and follow the designated route.

The Ultras did not comply with the request. Instead, they charged at the police officers and attacked them with punches, throwing stones and other objects and spitting.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the police officers were able to fend off the attack and were not injured. This was mainly due to their protective equipment, it added.
