Police officers who were highly exposed during the pandemic have not been more likely to contract Covid-19 than the rest of the population. A study conducted by the University of Bern showed that the level of antibodies provided different levels of protection depending on the virus variant. The study, conducted by the Institute for Infectious Diseases (IFIK) and published in the Journal of Medical Virology, examined the antibody levels of around 1000 employees of the Bern Cantonal Police over a period of 16 months. The team led by Prof. Dr. Parham Sendi found that the relatively young and healthy population of the Cantonal Police had a decreasing level of antibodies over time and with age, regardless of whether the antibodies were from an infection or a vaccination. The study also showed that Covid-19 vaccination or a previous infection provided protection against severe disease courses, but not against infections without symptoms or with mild symptoms. Those who had both an infection and a vaccination had the lowest risk of infection with the Omikron variant.
