Swiss Post supports the Federal Council's proposed adjustments to the universal postal service and at the same time calls for a political discussion on its universal service mandate from 2030. This should respond to the changing needs of customers, writes Swiss Post.
It can only be successful in the long term if it continues to develop sustainably and has a contemporary basic service mandate. Where demand is dwindling or changing, adjustments are needed, she wrote on Friday. Swiss Post must finance its universal service itself.
According to Swiss Post, the amendments to the ordinance are to be welcomed as a first step. But: "However, Swiss Post also needs to set the course for the Swiss Post of the day after tomorrow in a timely manner. This requires a further development of the universal service mandate," said CEO Roberto Cirillo in the press release.
Switzerland needs a strong public service beyond 2030, said Christian Levrat, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Swiss Post, according to the press release. This must now be developed, including digitalization.
In a report published on Friday, the Federal Council outlines the basic postal service from around 2030, including the replacement of A and B mail with a standard letter that must arrive no later than two days after posting. Post will also no longer have to be delivered every working day.
