The canton of Bern saw a shift in the balance of power between the left and right-wing parties in the recent elections. The Swiss People's Party (SVP) gained a seat in the bourgeois camp at the expense of the Free Democratic Party (FDP). On the left, the Green Party lost a seat while the Social Democratic Party (SP) gained one. The State Chancellery announced the results on Sunday evening. The Swiss People's Party (SVP) has achieved a voter share of 29.3 percent in the canton of Bern. It has won one seat and remains the strongest force in the canton. In total, it will be represented with eight seats in the National Council. The other winner of the National Council elections in the canton of Bern is the SP. The women's and men's lists together received 19.8 percent of the votes. Four women and one man were elected. The Green Party of Bern has lost one seat in the upcoming election, leaving them with only three seats in the Grand Chamber. Initial projections had predicted two seat losses for the party, but they ultimately received nine percent of the vote. The Green Liberal Party (GLP) in the Canton of Bern is now on an equal footing with the Greens. It was able to retain its three seats with its three existing representatives. The main list was able to win 7.9 percent of the votes. The Middle Canton of Bern will continue to be represented in the next legislature with two seats. The main list of the party received 6.2 percent of the votes. However, five sub-lists brought them the necessary votes for a second seat. The Free Democratic Party of Bern (FDP) lost one seat in the cantonal parliament. With 7.2 percent of the vote, it was not enough to retain the two seats it held in the previous legislature. The Christian Democratic People's Party (EVP) and the Swiss People's Party (EDU) will remain unchanged, each holding one seat in the next legislature. ©Keystone/SDA
