Kali Uchis is already a star in the USA and Latin America - but her music has hardly played a role in Switzerland so far. This could now change with her new album "Orquídeas".

She is young, she is successful and she is self-confident. "May God bless this ass," sings Kali Uchis on her new album, which will be released on Friday (January 12). On her fourth Spanish-language record, the 29-year-old presents herself as a power woman, a femme fatale. The release is entitled "Orquídeas", named after the Colombian national flower: the orchid.

Less than a year after Uchi's last record, listeners can expect a journey back to the Grammy award winner's roots. She mixes various Latin American genres, including reggaeton, dembow, bolero and salsa. Kali Uchis, whose real name is Karly-Marina Loaiza, grew up in the USA and Colombia. That is why she sings bilingually.

Tour with pop greats

She has toured with Lana Del Rey and has been in the studio with Snoop Dogg and the Gorillaz. Today, she plays to sold-out halls herself and performs at popular festivals such as Coachella.

She released three songs from her new album in advance. "Labios Mordidos" (meaning "biting lips") with Colombian music great Karol G was the most listened to - a song with guaranteed success. The two women sing lasciviously about a daring flirtation.

Uchis teamed up with Dominican rapper El Alfa and US rapper JT for "Muñekita" (meaning "little doll"). It is about a strong woman who is called a doll because of her appearance. The emotional song "Te Mata" is also exciting and illustrates what Kali Uchis is all about: her silky voice.

Uchis has a specific goal: "I want to redefine the way we see Latinas in music," she said, according to a press release.

Kali Uchis celebrates femininity

And that's what the 29-year-old does. She is self-determined with her body and plays with her charms. In her videos, she looks seductively into the camera, usually lightly clothed. Her album cover shows the singer naked, covered only with a few flower petals. She celebrates her femininity - and is right on trend.

She says what she wants and wears what she wants. That goes down well. The number of her followers is constantly growing, with more than six million users following her on Instagram. Around 36 million people listen to her music on the streaming service Spotify every month.

What will these 36 million listeners think of her new album? "Orquídeas" is a contradiction in the best sense of the word: on the one hand it sounds soft, sensual and feminine, on the other hand it sounds hard, restless and somewhat evil. And yet all 14 songs exude a touch of summer, the feeling of a balmy night in the pulsating streets of Bogotá. Maybe that's why the album will be released in January.
