Heavy thunderstorms with lots of rain covered the north of Switzerland on Wednesday morning. Over 200 flashes of lightning fell in the Schaffhausen region.

At the Lohn measuring station in the canton of Schaffhausen, 44 millimetres of rain were measured within one hour, as reported by MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, on the online portal X on Wednesday. These were multi-cell thunderstorms.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain partially flooded Geneva, the Basel region and Vaud on Tuesday evening. Geneva's airspace had to be closed for two hours. The fire departments in Basel-Landschaft and Vaud were called out hundreds of times.
