President Viola Amherd has expressed her shock at the attack in Magdeburg. "My thoughts are with the victims and their families," Amherd wrote on the short message service X. Switzerland stands by Germany in these difficult times. Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, also shared his thoughts on the attack.

"The barbaric attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg is a deep wound for the European family and a shocking reminder that our democracies must never let up. My thoughts are with the victims and the German people," wrote Berset on X.

French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on his channel that France shares the pain of the German people, to whom it expresses its deep solidarity.

At least two people, an adult and a small child, were killed in an attack at the Magdeburg Christmas market.

Saxony-Anhalt's Minister-President Reiner Haseloff also spoke of a large number of casualties, at least 60, and as some were seriously injured, further deaths could not be ruled out. "This is a catastrophe for the city of Magdeburg, for the state and for Germany in general," said Haseloff. The police spoke of 15 seriously injured.
