President Amherd meets Viktor Orban in Hungary

President Viola Amherd is expected to pay a presidential visit to Hungary on Thursday and Friday. Bilateral relations between Switzerland and Hungary, European policy and the European security situation will be among the topics of discussion at the meetings with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
This was announced by the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) on Monday.
Hungary will preside over the Council of the European Union (EU) in the second semester of 2024. According to the DDPS, the talks will therefore also focus on the ongoing negotiations between Switzerland and the European Union (EU). Meanwhile, the high-level conference on peace in Ukraine planned for June 15 and 16 at Bürgenstock LU will be an important topic when it comes to the security situation in Europe. The President of the Swiss Confederation will explain the aims of the conference from a Swiss perspective, it was added.
Bilateral cooperation within the framework of Swiss contributions to selected EU member states, including Hungary, will also be discussed. Bilateral economic relations will also be discussed. According to the Swiss government, Switzerland is the fifth-largest investor in Hungary. The 900 or so Swiss companies represented in the country have created almost 30,000 jobs. The volume of trade amounts to CHF 2.6 billion.
According to the DDPS, Amherd will also give a speech at the University of Budapest during the presidential visit. The President of the Swiss Confederation will also comment on Switzerland's situation in Europe and the prospects for the continent.
