The president of the mountain cantons, Carmelia Maissen, has warned against a "short-sighted and cynical view" of the resettlement of Alpine valleys. Resettlement could occur in individual cases, said the Graubünden government councillor (center) in an interview on Sunday.
"We certainly won't be giving up entire valleys," said Maissen in an interview with the NZZ am Sonntag newspaper. She criticized that the discussion about resettlement was being conducted from a purely monetary perspective.
Resettlement is a serious intervention for those affected, who lose their home, said the President of the Intergovernmental Conference of the cantons of Uri, Obwalden, Nidwalden, Glarus, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Graubünden, Ticino and Valais.
The settlement area and infrastructure have increased in recent years. But we must not forget: "The last few days have also shown that we have done a lot of things right over the last 50 years," said Maissen. The task now is to analyze the storms and evaluate where the weak points lie, taking climate scenarios into account.
