Inmates of the Thorberg prison in Krauchthal BE have gained access to the internet through smart TV devices. They were able to connect to an unsecured WiFi of a resident and surf the internet with the TVs. The prison authorities reacted and had the TVs modified. One inmate had managed to crack the four-digit code of his smart TV and connected it to the internet, confirmed Pascal Ludin, Deputy Head of the Bern Canton Justice Department, on Thursday in response to a query from the news portal Blick.ch on Tuesday. The case was uncovered when the inmates exchanged their TVs. An unprotected access to the internet is not common in the prison system, so the situation presented a problem, said Ludin. How many inmates managed to get an internet connection is unknown. In order to regain control of the situation, all TV sets were confiscated on July 17. This was not well received by the inmates and there was a riot, wrote the news portal 20min.ch at the time. The partially modified devices were returned on the same day, which calmed the situation, said Ludin. Now it is no longer possible to access the internet with the TVs. According to Ludin, the smart TVs are no longer "smart-capable". In addition, the resident has secured his WiFi with a code.
